During her trip, Parker-Ambrose presented a kite titled, “The Peace Comet” to the congregation and was hailed as an interpersonal innovator for the gesture. The first official OSOW festival took place on the second Sunday of October in 1985 as a marking celebration of its founder, Jane Parker-Ambrose’s legendary visit to the Soviet Women’s Peace Conference in 1975. ![]() “I didn’t think those kinds of stunts were possible it’s really interesting and exciting.” “It’s really amazing the kind of things they’re able to do with kites,” said spectator Lynn James. The team performed several synchronized acts though the spitting rain and demonstrated the versatility of their kites by slicing though the chilly air in perfectly aligned swirls and dramatic dives that averted the ground in the nick of time, every time. These “Revs” are capable of flying all directions, changing speeds and even stopping frozen in mid-air. New to the OSOW festival this year was the iQuad Kite Team, a performance act from Vancouver that uses technologically groundbreaking kites appropriately called Revolutions. “Everyone who was here really got a lot out of it all the kids had a great time at the parade.” “We got rained out a little bit, but I think it was still a lot of fun,” said Christina Welch, leading member of the nonprofit peace education group, Jovial Concepts, and volunteer coordinator of OSOW’s pet parade. Characters dressed as Mary Poppins and Ben Franklin also trotted alongside three llamas from Dalai Llama Farms. Kids marched around the field with pastel umbrellas, holding dove-shaped kites in front of a giant, sparkling pink cupcake float. Paul Glasspole, right, watches John Barresi fly his kite Oct. 10 at Stapleton Central Park for the 25th-annual One Sky One World kite flying celebration. Once you’ve honed your kite flying skills, you’ll be all set for One Sky One World in October-an international kite flying day of peace, which was started in Denver. The gray, stormy sky was highlighted with fantastic rainbow ribbons and colorful aerodynamic kites Oct. They can be used while surfing, skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, and pretty much any other outdoor activity you can think of, as long as there’s enough open land and air. Upgrade to a stunt kite, or bring your kite along for other extreme sports. Next Steps with the Kite: Once you’re a kite-flying expert, there’s no need to get bored. The best place to fly if you’re looking for a place closer to home is Stapleton’s Central Park because of its open fields and consistent wind. East of the city, Dove Valley Regional Park, Cherry Creek Reservoir, and Lowry’s Great Lawn Park often have ideal conditions. In the city itself, there are very few consistently windy days. Kite Locations: Flying a kite around Denver can be tricky. And it should go without saying (but we will anyway for good measure) that you want to avoid powerlines and inclement weather (read: lightning). Watch out for crowded areas when elevating your kite because a change in wind could cause your kite to crash into, say, a birthday party. Kite flying should be done away from trees and large buildings because any structural interference can affect wind qualities. Kite Considerations: The ideal wind for basic kite flying is somewhere between 10 and 25 miles per hour. I’m partial to the Butterfly Kite for Beginners and the Air Guitar Kite, but these are just a couple of their models. Browse their online selection of kites to find the kite for you. The Kite Store: While other places sell kites, Into the Wind on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall is a full-service kite shop with accessories, repairs, and tools to build your own kite.
